8th Grade Sparkles
In a time of tremendous changes, innovations, cultural diversity, digital citizenship and e-culture, it is very important for learners to understand the true meaning behind tolerance, equity, cross-cultural understanding, migration and immigration, nationalism, etc. Through this project, learners have been learning how to respond to the challenging question, “What would a cultural identity kit look like in today’s U.S. melting pot?”
The project explores the true meaning and impact of migration, immigration, and the cultural awareness needed to develop new or greater skills for tolerance, understanding, awareness of diversity and appreciation for “who we are, no matter where we come from or what we have.” Learners have been immersed in a cultural journey through literary works, ethnic foods, and faraway places and traditions.
One of their experiences was a field trip to two vastly different cultures that are in vastly different regions in the world. Fortunately we live in the diverse Los Angeles County where we were able to visit the African American Museum and trek forward to Chinatown, an informative trip laden with culture.
